The Type 90-II is, built upon the foundation of the Type 80/85 series of tanks, first revealed in 1992. However, it is significant in that it is the first third generation Chinese main battle tank.
It later influenced the development of the Type 96 and Type 99 series of tanks, and was Chinas first tank with a 125mm smoothbore gun and modular armor.
